Weak water pressure is one of the most common complaints among people living in Mexico City apartments — particularly in older buildings in Roma, Condesa and Colonia Narvarte. If your shower feels like a light drizzle or your kitchen tap takes forever to fill a pot, here's what's likely causing it and what can actually fix it.
How water delivery works in Mexico City buildings
Unlike cities where water is delivered at street pressure directly to your tap, most Mexico City buildings store water in a rooftop tank (tinaco) and rely on gravity — or a pump — to deliver it to each apartment. This means the water pressure you experience is largely determined by how high above you the tank is and whether the building's pump is working properly.
Common causes of low pressure
- Empty or low tinaco: If the tank isn't filling properly (often due to scheduled water cuts in certain areas), there's simply not enough water to create pressure. Check if your neighbours have the same problem.
- Failed or undersized pump: Many buildings have a pressure booster pump that compensates for gravity. If it fails or is too small for the building, pressure drops throughout.
- Sediment buildup in pipes: Older buildings, especially pre-1980s constructions in Roma and Condesa, often have galvanised pipes that accumulate scale over decades, narrowing the flow.
- Partially closed valves: Sometimes a valve wasn't fully reopened after a previous repair. Worth checking the shut-off valve under each fixture.
- Under-sink filter clogging: If you have a water filter installed, a clogged cartridge restricts flow noticeably at that tap.
What can actually fix it
If the problem is building-wide, it's the building administrator's responsibility — but if it's limited to your apartment or specific taps, solutions range from cleaning aerators (the mesh screens on tap ends, which clog with sediment) to installing a small pressure booster pump under the sink.
