Water quality in Mexico City: what expats actually need to know

One of the first things expats learn in Mexico City is that you don't drink the tap water. But the reality is more nuanced than that — and there are practical, cost-effective solutions that most long-term residents use instead of constantly buying garrafones.

Why tap water isn't safe to drink directly

Mexico City's tap water is treated at the source, but the distribution infrastructure — old pipes, rooftop tanks (tinacos) that may not be cleaned regularly, and the building plumbing itself — can introduce bacteria and contaminants before the water reaches your tap. It's not about the original water quality; it's about the journey from the source to your glass.

The garrafón problem

Most expats start by relying on garrafones — 20-litre water jugs delivered to the apartment. They work, but they're expensive (typically $40–$80 MXN per jug, multiple per week for a household), heavy, create significant plastic waste, and run out at inconvenient times. Most long-term residents eventually switch to a filtration system.

Under-sink water filters: the practical solution

A three-stage under-sink filter or reverse osmosis system installed at the kitchen tap gives you clean drinking water directly from the tap, indefinitely. The initial installation cost is recovered within two to three months of what you'd spend on garrafones. Cartridges need replacing every 6–12 months depending on the system.

What about water for cooking, brushing teeth, ice?

With a properly installed filter at the kitchen tap, you can use that water for all of these. Many expats who haven't installed a filter still use tap water for cooking (boiling kills bacteria) but not for drinking directly.
